Hiring a digital marketer is one of the biggest decisions for a growing business. The right person brings you customers from Google, Instagram and ads. The wrong one costs you months and money with little to show for it.
Abu Dhabi has many marketers, agencies and freelancers, so how do you pick? This guide covers what to check before you hire, which warning signs to avoid, and whether a freelancer or an agency suits you.
What does a digital marketer actually do?
A digital marketer helps your business get found online and turns attention into customers. Depending on your needs, that can include:
- SEO: helping your website show up on Google when people search for what you sell
- Social media marketing: growing your audience and engagement on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn
- Paid ads: running Google Ads and Meta Ads that bring enquiries
- Content marketing: blogs, posts and copy that build trust
- Website work: making sure your site is fast, clear and easy to use on mobile
You rarely need everything at once. A good marketer starts with what will help your business most.
6 things to check before you hire
1. A real portfolio with results
Ask to see past work and what it achieved, such as more enquiries, more followers or better rankings. Screenshots and short case studies are a good sign. If someone can’t show any work, be careful.
2. Skills that match your goals
A restaurant needs strong Instagram content. A service business may need Google visibility and a good website. Check that the person has done the kind of work you need, not just a long list of services.
3. Local market knowledge
Abu Dhabi customers search, shop and follow brands in their own way. A marketer who understands the local market, languages and audience will plan better than someone using a generic template.
4. Reviews and testimonials
Look for real feedback from past clients, such as Google reviews or testimonials with names. Better still, ask if you can speak to a previous client.
5. Clear communication
Do they explain things in plain language? Do they ask about your business, audience and budget before pitching? Good marketers listen first.
6. Transparent pricing
You should know what you’re paying for and what you’ll receive. Avoid anyone who won’t explain their pricing or what’s included.
Red flags to avoid
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. Nobody controls Google. Anyone who promises a top spot is either guessing or using risky tricks that can get your site penalised.
- No examples of past work. Confident marketers can show what they’ve done.
- No clear plan. If the pitch is “we’ll do everything” with no strategy, walk away.
- Pressure to sign immediately. A good fit doesn’t need a rushed decision.
- No reporting. You should be able to see what’s working, such as traffic, leads and engagement.
Freelancer or agency: which is better?
A freelance digital marketer usually means direct communication, a personal approach and flexible pricing. You work with the person doing the work, which suits small and growing businesses.
An agency brings a larger team with many specialists, which can suit big projects, but you may deal with account managers instead of the person doing the work, and costs are often higher.
For many small businesses in Abu Dhabi, a skilled freelancer gives the best balance of attention, flexibility and value. The right choice depends on your budget, the size of the project and how involved you want to be.
Questions to ask before you hire
- What results have you achieved for similar businesses?
- What would you do first for my business, and why?
- How will you report progress, and how often?
- What’s included in your price?
- How long before I might see results?
A good marketer will answer these honestly, including that SEO usually takes a few months to show results.
